Werder had to settle for a 1-1 draw at home to Stuttgart on Friday evening. “We didn’t find a way through,” against a team that sat very deep said Captain Max Kruse. Florian Kohfeldt agreed, saying “There are two or three methods against an opponent that sits so deep. Long-range shots, that worked once. Crosses that rarely worked. There wasn't enough room for runs from deep. It didn't work well."
Werder had to come from behind for the second time in two weeks after Stuttgart went ahead in the second minute with their first attack of the game. The Green-Whites took longer than their opponents to settle into the game and create chances. Shortly before half time, Kruse worked the ball to Davy Klaasen, who fired in the equaliser from around 20 yards out (45’). The second half belonged to...
SV Werder have taken points from every competitive match in 2019 so far and this run should continue on Friday (22/02/19) at 20:30 at home to VfB Stuttgart. Stuttgart are at the wrong end of the table and will be hoping to ease their struggles with a win in Bremen. Head coach Florian Kohfeldt therefore feels it will be “an extremely difficult game,” and stressed that his team “has to be at their...
Following second-choice Werder Bremen goalkeeper Stefanos Kapino's return to action after a lengthy injury, first-choice Jiri Pavlenka has healthy competition for the number one jersey once again. Kapino has ambitions to earn a place in Florian Kohfeldt’s side. For Pavleka however, Kapino is not a rival, but a friend and good team-mate, who he has “already had a lot of fun with”. He is very happy...
Fin Bartels is beaming. On Tuesday afternoon, he’ll train with the rest of the squad again. It’s not the first time, and it won’t be the final time. Bartels is back and could soon play in the Bundesliga again after 14 months out due to injury. “This week is a really hard test,” said Bartels, who completed his first training session back with the team last week.
Werder bagged a point in Berlin with a last-minute goal from Claudio Pizarro. “It’s a lucky result for us, but we showed our spirit and we’re happy that we were able to take a point,” said Sebastian Langkamp after the game.
After Werder didn’t really make an impact in the game in the first half, the Green-Whites were lucky to take something from the game in Berlin. Former Werder striker Davie Selke put the home side ahead (26’) and Hertha led at half time. Werder were better in the second half, but it took a free kick from Claudio Pizarro in the 96th minute of the game to rescue a point. Pizarro is now the oldest...
Werder’s 22nd game of the Bundesliga season comes away to Hertha Berlin this Saturday (18:30 CET). The Green-Whites will want to pick up another three points in order to continue their climb up the table towards the European places.
Werder’s birthday week showed just what Florian Kohfeldt’s team are capable of. The Green-Whites won on penalties in Dortmund and were 3-0 up after just 28 minutes against Augsburg at the weekend. They did this with a new system based around counter attacking. Werder’s tactic of having a lot of possession didn’t get them as many points as they would have liked in the Hinrunde, so the coaches...
Yuya Osako returned to Werder team training for the first time in this calendar year on Thursday. However, the Japanese attacker is unlikely to feature on Saturday away at Hertha BSC as Green-Whites head coach Florian Kohfeldt explained in his pre-match press conference. “I haven’t given up all hope just yet but the is a strong chance he won’t play,” said the Werder coach. The newly awarded...
Werder Bremen’s Yuya Osako has won Japan’s annual “Footballer of the Year“ award for 2018 in a survey carried out across 160 Japanese sportswriters. “Of course, I’m very proud of this accolade. It’s something very special for me,“ the 28-year-old told WERDER.DE. “My teammates deserve the award too, because we can only be successful as a team.”
A week ago, Yuya Osako returned from the Asia Cup. However, an immediate return for the Japan international was not mentioned after his country lost in the Asia Cup final. Since returning to Bremen, Osako has missed the DFB-Pokal round of sixteen clash in Dortmund as well as the Green-Whites 120th anniversary match against FC Augsburg. This has been due to an inflamed tendon suffered in the back...
Since the winter break, Florian Kohfeldt has put his faith in Niklas Moisander and Sebastian Langkamp in central defence. Milos Veljkovic has only started one game; away in Nürnberg when Langkamp was out with a head injury. However, Langkamp returned to the starting XI for the win against Augsburg. Florian Kohfeldt’s decision was for Langkamp and not against Veljkovic, and it’s by no means a...
Werder didn’t miss many of the chances they had against Augsburg. From five shots in the first half, the Green-Whites turned three into goals and had Jiri Pavlenka to thank at the other end of the pitch. “It was a bit lucky,” said Maximilian Eggestein after the game. Werder saw the game out well in the second half: “That was really intelligent,” said Florian Kohfeldt.
Werder have been drawn away to FC Schalke 04 in the quarter-final of the DFB Pokal. The game will take place on either the 2nd or 3rd of April 2019.
There were big celebrations before the game against Augsburg in the Weserstadion this afternoon, and they continued long after. Thanks to a strong first-half performance, Werder beat Augsburg 4-0, their biggest victory of the season so far. Milot Rashica gave Werder an early lead with a fine finish (5’). Johannes Eggestein then added a second with a well-struck volley (27’) before Rashica scored...
Werder are looking to end an eventful birthday week with a victory over Augsburg this Sunday. “It’s a super important game for us. If we get the points, we’re right in the mix for the upper places of the table. The fans will also make sure that it’s a special game,” said Florian Kohfeldt. The game kicks off at 15:30 CET on Sunday 10 February.
The Werder players were relieved and ecstatic as Max Kruse’s winning penalty sent them through to the DFB-Pokal quarter-finals at the expense of Borussia Dortmund. However, there were also some unwanted side-effects that came with the tiring victory on Tuesday night.
SV Werder Bremen will be without striker Martin Harnik for several weeks. The 31-year-old suffered a muscle injury in his during Tuesday night’s DFB-Pokal win in Dortmund.
SV Werder Bremen mourn the death of Rudi Assauer, who passed away at the age of 74 on Wednesday. Assauer made 188 appearances for the Green-Whites between 1970 and 1976, scoring four goals. He also began his managerial career at the club. He was involved with Werder until 1981, going on to join FC Schalke 04 and becoming a club legend.
