A lot of time to work on things

The plan: There are exactly 14 days between the Gladbach game and Werder’s next match in Freiburg. That gives the team a lot of time to work on things following the 1-3 defeat. Head coach Florian Kohfeldt wants to avoid any knee-jerk decisions and focus on “a good, long week of training” before the next game. Werder won’t be playing a friendly during the international break. There are too few...

Crucial games for Werder internationals

For the third time already this season, an international break will put Bundesliga football on hold for a weekend. For head coach Florian Kohfeldt, the break has not exactly come at a bad time. A total of 13 Werder players took off for international duty after the game against Gladbach. Aside from a number of scheduled friendlies, many of Werder’s internationals will be fighting for some...

“It really highlighted what we’re missing”

Werder fell to a 1-3 home defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday. “We made mistakes and didn’t get the goals when going forward. We didn’t set ourselves up for a good game,” said Max Kruse after the game. Florian Kohfeldt’s side have some work to do following their second home defeat in a row. “We don’t need to question our groundwork, but we need to work on the individual mistakes,” said...

Gladbach have too much for Werder

Werder suffered a 1-3 home defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach this afternoon. It was a tight first half with both sides respecting each other and waiting for the opposition to slip up. It took Werder 20 minutes to really announce themselves in the game, but they still failed to create any real chances. Borussia made Werder pay for their lack of bite just before the break, when Alassane Plea put...

“Werder could play with a diamond”

Flexiblity is an important trait which has been useful for Werder so far this season. Whether the team plays 4-3-3, a flat 4-4-2 or the traditional diamond, the different formations have the potential to shape Werder’s game. Thus it isn’t surprising that head coach Florian Kohfeldt has a number of plans in his head for every games.

On the hunt for points

Florian Kohfeldt wants his team to approach this Saturday’s home match against Borussia Mönchengladbach with courage – doing so will help Werder get back to winning ways. Coach Florian Kohfeldt believes that the Green-Whites have learnt from back-to-back Bundesliga defeats and are ready for their next opponents. On Saturday at 15:30 CET, the Foals, who recently lost to Freiburg in the Bundesliga...

From 18 to 20

When Florian Kohfeldt names his team on a matchday, like all Bundesliga managers, he names seven substitutes. However, this could be about to change. The DFL Commission spoke out in favour of increasing the number of substitutes from seven to nine at the beginning of the week. A decision is still to be made.

The chemistry is there for all to see

There’s a 20-year age different between Claudio Pizarro and Johannes Eggestein. One brings experience and has an unparalleled eye for goal, whilst the other has started to cement himself in the Werder first team in his third year as a professional. Pizarro believes that Eggestein is “an ice-cold striker.”

“It’s too early to call it a dream tie”

Nuri Sahin has never played against Borussia Dortmund, the club where he came through the youth academy. This was likely to change this season, as the midfielder left to join Werder. However, with the Green-Whites now being drawn against BVB in the cup, Sahin could now face his old side three times this campaign. When asked if it was a dream tie, the midfielder replied “It would be if we were...

Analyse our mistakes and look ahead to next weekend

Building on what wasn’t done well: Werder will quickly shake off yesterday’s disappointment in Mainz, work on the performance and then look ahead to next weekend. This is exactly how the team started their Monday morning after their 2-1 defeat in Mainz. The squad started the new week with a training session on Monday morning and further sessions await the team in the forthcoming days. “We will...

"We were sleeping for the whole first half"

SVW were beaten 2-1 in Mainz on Matchday 10. “We left it too late to start playing football. It was a case of too little, too late,” explained Maximilian Eggestein after the game. It was the second defeat in a row for Werder in the Bundesliga. “We will speak to the players. But it is not worth having a meltdown over,” said Werder coach Florian Kohfeldt.

Werder drop points in Mainz

Tough decisions for the boss

Florian Kohfeldt has a lot of difficult decisions to make these days. Philipp Bargfrede and Niklas Moisander have both returned from their respective injuries and are in the mix to start against Mainz. Johannes Eggestein, Florian Kainz and Martin Harnik, amongst others, also performed well in the DFB-Pokal mid-week. Florian Kohfeldt will have a selection headache, but it’s a good problem to have.
